10 steps to your success!
Our job is to work with words – your words – and we are committed to working fairly and professionally. Success for us is a successful project for you and we want you, your friends and colleagues to keep coming back to us.
The following is a guide to how you can help us serve you better:
Starting off
1 Keep your document simple and consider how best to prepare your manuscript. Know what to ask us to do and be clear about what you expect from us. The better prepared you are, the less time we will spend on it and your bill will be lower!
(However, if you're new to all of this don't worry – many of our clients are new to the field. We are sensitive to this and can help you decide what your project requires.)
2 Be clear about the services we provide and our terms. See more on our Rates page if you're not sure.
3 We take pride in our ability to work fast, but be aware that getting a manuscript into shape takes time. Be up front about your budget and don't give artificial or short deadlines that make us work long hours when we don't need to! We'll bend over backwards to fit in with your timetable – if you need us to work nights or weekends, we will (but please be prepared to pay a little extra for it).
4 Having chosen us, trust us. And if you need someone to take on more responsibility, consider using us as a project manager. Pick our brains. We have been around the block so may well have come across similar issues before. You're hiring an expert – we can save you from reinventing the wheel!
When sending the work
5 Keep us in the loop. Give plenty of notice of work that will be arriving on our desk and let us know in reasonable time if the schedule changes. We're very happy to rearrange our schedules and deliver your work by your deadline but we do need reasonable notice.
6 Please ensure that you provide us with all the necessary final documents to edit or proofread and the relevant information about the project and the people involved. One thing we both want to avoid is us finishing work on a document only to be sent a revised version!
7 Agree with us in advance about document formats and how we will present the finished work i.e. Word .doc or.docx, tracked changes (Word), Google Docs, InDesign, PDF (with comments) hard copy etc. Don't get hung up on this – we're used to doing different things depending on your needs and we'll advise you on practicalities if necessary.
Whilst we are doing the work
8 Please tell us if you're going on holiday or on leave and whom to contact instead, especially if our deadline falls during your absence. If you work in-house and are leaving your position, please introduce us to your replacement.
After we've signed off
9 Please acknowledge receipt of work when it comes in. This is very important for both of us.
10 Please send us a copy of the product when published. We'll enjoy seeing it as much as you will!
